Until recently, Boyds, MD real estate has been located in a fairly rural area. There has been much development in this community located close to Washington D.C., especially in the areas near Germantown and Clarksburg. This community was established in the mid 1800’s as a village for construction workers for the railroad. Today, residents can still find transportation mainly to Washington D.C. via the MARC system.
There are several unique historical sites to visit near Boyds, MD real estate. The most notable is the Boyds Negro School. Located at 19510 White Ground Road, this building measuring only 22 feet by 30 feet and consisting of one room was the only public school available to African Americans living in the Boyds area from 1895-1936. Students in grades 1-8 were served here, many of which walked several miles to go to class. The Boyds Historical Society purchased the property in 1980 and have worked hard to restore it to how it looked in 1900. Today, the school is available for view by appointment and also open the last Sunday of each month from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Community groups can also make reservations to meet here, it is a great asset to the all who call Boyds, MD home. The Boyds Historical Society meets every month and works hard to preserve local history and plan events for the community.
The other highlights of Boyds are the recreational activities. Black Hill Regional Park is a very popular spot, but don’t worry, it is large enough that it still feels like you are getting away. Come here for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or birdwatching. Stop into the nature center to learn about local eagles and other creatures that live nearby. Watch for classes and events that take place here and also get out on the water in a kayak or other vessel. Bring your dog to the fenced in dog park and also don’t forget your glove to play catch and take a rest for a picnic lunch. South Germantown Recreational Park is another great place that has something for all ages. The seven acre adventure playground is a hit with the children. They love the large castle and ship. When they get too hot, head over to the splash park to cool off during the summer season. Also go for a hike or bike ride here, plant a garden, have a picnic, play miniature golf basketball, or tennis, visit the driving or archery range, and cheer on the soccer players at the SoccerPlex. Central Park Pond also offers fishing access. It is truly an amazing 695 acre park and a true gem for all residents of Boyds.
